pH Measurement in the Reprocessing of Mineral Oil Products
Naturally occurring mineral oil products contain sulfur compounds as well as other contaminants, which have to be removed in a first processing step. One common process is hydrodesulfurization. In this process, the sulfur components are converted to hydrogen sulfide using hydrogen and a nickel/molybdenum or cobalt/molybdenum catalyst, which is separated in the next step. In the meantime, the gas is dissolved in an aqueous phase, whereby the pH value must be regulated.
Challenges
- Aqueous phase with hydrogen sulfide offers high corrosion potential pH value must be between 6-8
- Temperature: 40-50 °C
- Pressure: 4 bar
- Hydrogen sulfide affects the reference of the pH sensor
Why Knick ?
By switching to the externally pressurized SE557-X/1-electrode, the previous sensor replacement rate of 1 per month was reduced to 3 in 1.5 years. This resulted in a cost saving of almost 90 % for the material alone and additionally by saving the working time for the monthly sensor change.
